Doppelganger Gang

The shop bell rings and a beautiful woman walks in. Xyrella, a local healer, sees through Arthur’s disguise and offers him the same arrangement that she had with his master; rare herbs in trade for her…services. Arthur’s libido answers a resounding yes and he says he will come visit her shortly. Salvador is so surprised to see the woman that he mistakenly picks up and drinks a sleeping poison instead of the pep tonic Arthur had suggested he drink. Viper is skeptical of this strange, mysterious woman. He and Rin follow the two back to her shop, to keep an eye on her. Everything seems legit.

The next day Kai runs into Rin and Viper in the streets. He tells them that the two Kiarian women he saved have been kidnapped and taken to a place called ‘The Estate’. Rin goes to find information about the estate out from Court and runs into Karazamov, who he sends to Xyrella. Viper talks to the High Priest who says that while the order despises the practices of the estate they are technically within the law. The high priest is going over maps and books that he took from the recently murdered priests study.

The group decides to head out to ‘the Estate’. After a day of travel they reach the old keep bordering a swamp. Kai scouts ahead and finds a back way in. He’s attacked by strange lizard like creatures. Kai leads the party into the secret entrance to the keep where they are attacked by a doppelganger. Kai also turns out to be a doppelganger. Court picks the lock on the door and the group passes through the old dungeon to the kitchen. The residents of the estate offer them all the hospitality they have available. With free reign to explore the central keep they explore thoroughly. Viper sits on an enchanted throne that lets him sense all the people in the surrounding area.

Meanwhile Kai meets with the proprietor of the estate, Sasha. Sasha is one of the agents for the Beetle King. He tells kai that he did indeed kidnap the two Kiarian women, but has since let them go. He only needed them so his doppelgangers could steal their likeness. He goads Kai and ends up spitting blood with a few cracked ribs. Kai leaves, determined to find a way to end the Estate.

The party reunites and leaves the Estate. They decide that they will have to find a way to put it out of business permanently. Viper tells Arthur of the secret laboratory below the alchemist shop.

Justice will be served

Viper has a meeting with High Priest Krosen, and leaves cowed, heading for the inn.

Salvador returns to the Inn to find that Clint, an old man and fixture of the inn is missing. Assuming he is sick Salvador, directions in hand, proceeds to deliver lunch to the old man. When he arrives he finds the shoe shop is closed and locked. Salvador lets himself in and snoops around, feeding the cat, and rifling through the mans possessions. He finds that his clothes have been taken and that the man is nowhere to be found.

Meanwhile Arthur Justice disguises himself as his master, and starts advertising his Alchemist shop. His luck is just good enough that a Knight and former one night stand Sonya Brettenia arrives hoping to buy something from him. Luckily for Arthur she does not recognize him. Sonya makes an odd request for whole beetles and is quite insistent that he sell her all of them. She pays handsomely for the bag of beetles. Noting her odd behavior Arthur suspects that Sonya is a doppelganger. Changing into normal clothes, the Vigilante gives chase from the rooftops. This does not go so well as a failed jump results in a sprained ankle. Limping after Sonya Arthur runs into an old acquaintance, Viper Cross. Viper convinces Arthur to join him at the inn, and to wear his cloak, where they can talk of doppelgangers.

At the final rest inn Court, Salvador, Viper, and Arthur begin talks of Doppelgangers only to be interrupted when Karazamov shows up. Arthur quickly hides in the smoke room, narrowly avoiding Karazamov. Salvador and Viper accept Karazamov’s request to help him with some bandits, and he and Salvador leave for the inner city.

Arthur runs into a guard and lights him on fire to secure his escape. Viper puts the fire out, and assures the guard he will track down the rapscallion. Viper shows up at the alchemist shop. With righteous conviction Viper vows not to let Arthur leave his sight, lest he cause even more mischief in Folkchester.

The next morning Viper takes Arthur to meet with their traveling companions. Arthur nearly flees as he sees the towering Karazamov, but his disguise, and an unruly face-guard conceal the vigilante’s true identity from the single-minded knight.

Karazamov leads the party to a bandit camp, well aware it is an ambush. Karazamov assures Salvador that he has a plan…..Confronting the guards and springing the trap the four adventurers are assaulted by logs and crossbows from the well prepared bandits.

The bandit attack is furious and more bandits lurk at the edge of the conflict, prepared to attack. The adventurers handle the encounter so well that the remaining bandits flee, cutting their losses. They do not get away unscathed as one bandit on a cart is impaled by Karazamov’s sword. He reveals that this was his plan all along. In order to find the hidden bandit camp Karazamov needed them to take his sword so he could use his Kae powers to track it.

The party reaches the bandit’s lair, an abandoned temple to Moria Godess of Fate, and prepare to surprise the bandits. Karazamov turns to Arthur with a hard expression on his face and says “We will see these bandits brought to justice and then I will personally see that you get the justice you deserve Arthur”

Sand in the Hourglass

Kai desperately searched for a healer in order to save the life of of the Kiarian woman he pulled from the collapsed building. The guards following him proved useless, but a simple bakers wife gave him directions to a woman named Xyrella with a motherly smile. Kai met with Xyrella and offered to pay her price so she would heal the woman. The price was his blood. Kai left the room so the room so Xyrella could work in private. When Kai returned he paid his debt, the consequences of which he did not know. He took the woman and the child back to the inn.

Meanwhile Rin, Salvador, and Viper returned to the Final Rest Inn; followed closely by 10 guards. Court shared news of Rutheford hiring a large number (some 300) new mercenaries. They also found out that the location of the Labyrinth is a closely guarded secret. Only one member of the survey team who found the Labyrinth survived and he has gone missing.

Rin met members of of Kybal Reshi’s gang. They insulted him but were unable to provoke him.

The next day Kai woke to find the two Kiarians gone without a trace. Viper asked Kai’s assistance in locating the Labyrinth. While questioning the barkeep Salvador ‘offered’ to help also. The party went to the main square to see the Guardian enter the city and see if they could meet with Rutherford.

On the way to the main square 13 members of Kybal Reshi’s gang ambushed the party in hopes of taking Rin’s sword. They were clearly mistaken and were quickly defeated. Rin added another severed hand to his tally and Salvador found a new pair of boots.

At the square Salvador and Rin approached Rutherford’s men only to be given the cold shoulder and the threat of guards. Rutherford himself was missing but all the other merchants where there. Strangely the ore merchant was not sending a large amount of product, and what he was sending was unrefined. The shipping clerk provided Viper more information. Horus Sesant purchased Rutherford’s shipping slots. Viper also found out that the ore shipment came directly from the mines instead of the warehouse.

Hours spoke with Rin and Salvador. Salvador warned Horus of a possible threat to the shipments but Horus was not phased. In fact he offered to dine with both of them as an act of good faith.

Kai left to keep watch for more out of place shipments. Rin, Salvador, and Viper went to the temple where Rin hoped to send a message to his family regarding Kybal Reshi. Salvador was surprised to find not one, but two of his indiscretions waiting for him in the temple in the form of Lizbeth and Saphron. Two former lovers and religious iniquities. Neither were happy to see him. Salvador tried to talk himself out of the situation but he was interrupted by a very unhappy Viper. Viper exploded in evangelical exposition on the wayward Kiarian. Rin tried to defend Salvador but only made himself look bad in the eyes of the assembled priests. Salvador and Rin took the first chance to escape (for now). While fuming and pacing Viper is confronted by none other than High priest Krosen himself, drawn by the commotion.

A Beginning 5-19-2013

The wind howled through the jagged, white capped, Skyteeth mountains. It rushed down the foothills into the Emirak Provence. The tornpeak mines moaned as the cold wind passed their gaping maw. One mine, the deepest and oldest of the lot, groaned with a deeper sound. The sound of timbers failing under the weight of ages, the sound of rock on rock as old barriers collapsed, and finally an echo deeper than any to come before it. The wind continued, carrying rumors of what had been uncovered to the town of Folkchester. The rumors arrived like a pebble in a pond. This was not the beginning, but it was a beginning.

Our heroes’ story picks up in the town of Folkchester. Salvador hears rumors of a labyrinth uncovered in a mine. More importantly he hears that a building has inexplicably collapsed in the merchant district. Salvador, Viper, and Rin go to investigate. The first to respond, however, is Kai who climbs into the collapsed building to save a mother trapped under debris and her daughter. Just as he gets the two to safety the trio arrive to survey the damage. Kiarian merchants lie dead in the aftermath of a battle.

The guards arrive and try to arrest Salvador but Viper steps in. Kai leaves with the mother and daughter to take them to a doctor. Rin and Viper notice the guards are cordoning off the area but before they can react another building has a partial collapse.

A giant metal warrior exits the warehouse and confronts Salvador in an effort to take him into custody. He introduces himself, Karazamov, as a Knight of the Anvil order. He immediately takes notice of Rin and his family sword and a duel ensues. Rin is insulted that Karazamov sends a suit of armor to fight him, and with only slight difficulty disables the golem. Karazamov re-enters his armor, satisfied with Rin’s performance. He asks Rin to join the Knights. Rin, his honor affronted by fighting the armor and not the man insults Karazamov and taunts him into fighting again, without his armor.

Karazamov’s handily defeats Rin, proving his skill is superior. Viper steps in, catching Karazamov off guard and capturing him. He demands to know why Karazamov has killed the innocent Kiarians. In private Karazamov shows Viper that the warriors were transporting highly illegal borean steel from Kozaria and that at least one of them is a member of the Cult of Shadows. Karazamov claims that he cares not for casualties if he accomplishes his duty. He also hints at internal problems in the ranks of the knights. Salvador, who has been secretly listening the whole time tells Karazamov that he knows a renegade knight. The party is allowed to leave, but Karazamov sends guards to keep an eye on them and promises to talk to Salvador about Arthur when he has time.
